Amtrack Road Trip - 2001
Most Convenient Ever
by Ann & Jake Snyder
Have you ever wanted to go on one of the Amtrak Road Trips in other years, but could not get away from work, or found that the chunk of time or money just did not fit right then? This year’s is the best ever in terms of a bargain all around! Other trips have taken us to Dearborn, Michigan or St. Louis, Missouri, and have been well worth the time, effort and expense. But one of the destinations we have considered over the years has finally been chosen – the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend, Indiana.
This year you will not even have to ask the boss for a few hours off on Friday: The train leaves in the evening. The fares to and from South Bend are the lowest of all the Amtrak Road Trips so far at $26 round trip. The hotel rooms are substantially reduced from the $129 to $149 range to $69 per night. The hotel has all amenities, including sauna, pool, lounge and restaurant, and it is only five blocks from the Studebaker National Museum. (We could have done better on the price, but the place was three miles farther away and had an outdoor pool).
And if you want to come along but simply cannot make it? All is not lost. Due to the train schedule, you can come to Union Station with its undergound pub atmosphere and join in until the train leaves. Stay later if you like!
