Do you remember the first time you saw an MG? Was it on the road? In a parking lot? A dealer’s showroom? An advertisement? Wherever it was, one thing is certain: seeing that car initiated a series of events – curiosity, investigation, evaluation - that eventually culminated in your decision to acquire an MG. For some of us, the elapsed time may have been days while for others it may have literally been decades. But whatever the timing, the important point is that the process started for most of us with seeing the car.
So if owning an MG starts with seeing an MG, doesn’t it make sense for us to do what we can to make sure that as many people as possible actually see an MG? Especially if we think that our club would benefit from the addition of newer and younger owners?
And where can people see an MG nowadays? No more show rooms or advertisements, that’s for sure, and seeing an MG on the road is about as likely as seeing a UFO. So what’s left?
This year, the club will be encouraging members to attend some of the many local car shows that occur on almost any summer weekend in the Chicago area. We have selected a handful to qualify for “MG Bucks” for members who enter their cars in these shows. By entering our cars in these shows, the chain of seeing-to-buying will hopefully be started in some of the viewers.
The shows that we have selected are similar to British Car Festival in terms of being a low key way to spend an afternoon with like minded enthusiasts. They all have a multitude of varieties of cars entered, have refreshments & washrooms on site, often have light entertainment, and all –without exception- draw very large crowds of spectators. We have selected a group of shows that cover the entire Chicago metropolitan area, so there must be one near you wherever you live.
So pack you cooler and your lawn chair, bring a camera and a few bucks for the vendors, and plan on having some fun. There are currently very few MG’s to be found in these shows, so you may find yourself and your car to be of great interest. And you may also find yourself enjoying a chance to see the Model A’s and T’s, Corvettes, GTO’s, Road Runners, Mustangs, Packards, and other cars that are plentiful at these shows.
Watch the newsletter for info on specific shows that we have selected as being eligible for an “MG Bucks” award. Of course, you can go to any other show you want and will probably enjoy it but only those shows identified in the newsletter will also get you”MG Bucks” for attending.
