William 'Wilbur' Mennell The spring driving season is upon us. Early spring rains have washed what is hopefully the last of the salt from the roads and we have had several warm sunny days. It’s time to drop the hood and hit the road.

By this month’s meeting we should be pretty close to having a working budget for the year with a positive balance. One thing that we have gotten away from in the recent past is that the proceeds from the 50/50 drawing used to be donated to a local charity. We will be reinstating that practice. Let the board know if you have any suggestions for a good local cause. We are still looking for volunteers to help with the Driveline and the December holiday party.

Last month I had a little quiz where I misspoke about Graham Hill. He did in fact race an MG. In March 1963 he drove a Midget in the 3-hour enduro at Sebring. Retired with transmission failure, go figure. The winning, and only, response came from Kim Tonry. Hill rode in an MG Midget during the Parade of Drivers at the British Gran Prix at Silverstone in 1961. The answer that I was looking for was that in 1962 Hill won his first world championship driving for BRM, which was the racing arm of the Rubery Owen company. They supplied parts to various British car manufacturers, including rostyle wheels to MG. Bit of a stretch? Well it is RUBERY Owens.
