Jake Snyder Camping Trip to the BRIC
July 19-21, 2002

Bring your tent and sleeping bags and enjoy a weekend of watching some of the most famous racing cars from the past fifty-odd years! There will be historic F1 cars, Can-Am cars and representatives of virtually every make ever raced. Including MGs!
Camping MG style
The BRIC is the Brian Redman International Challenge held at Road America on July 18 through 20. This event was formerly known as the Chicago Historic Races. Road America is about two hoursí drive north of Chicago. A group of club members reserved eight adjoining campsites less than a mile from the track at Plymouth Rock Campground, and these sites each hold 4 adults. As MGs comfortably hold but two persons, there are several vacancies that can be filled by club members.

Check in time is 3 P.M., after which we can set our tents for the weekend. In the past, Friday supper has been a blue-gill fry at a local restaurant, followed by a walk through Elkhart Lake for an ice-cream cone or just to look at the many vintage cars driven to the weekend event. There is a parade of racing cars that travels from the track to the Friday night concours in Elkhart Lake. This occurs just after the last track event at about 5 P.M. It is a wonderful sight that can be viewed along the road in Elkhart Lake.
Cars on track turns 6-7 at Road America
Tickets for the track can be purchased at the gates. The admission fees to the track are $15 for Friday, $35 for Saturday and $35 for Sunday.

The paddock is an open-air museum, and the ticket price covers it all. Road and Track is supposed to be there this year, and that could mean that Peter Egan will be there signing his books. It is almost a sure thing that Burt Levy will be signing, as well.

Saturday night the campers gather to grill and eat together (bring your own meat to grill if you eat it, and a dish to pass around). Then we go back to Elkhart Lake to view the Concours díElegance, watch (and maybe, buy) cars being sold at Mecumís auction. Elkhart Lake is the home of Siebkenís of Burt Levyís The Last Open Road fame, and it is worth the wait at the bar to have beer or pop in such a place.

Sunday is the final racing day. There are the races for the big car classes and for the small-bore cars, some driven by CMGC members. The cars would be fit for any museum, and to see them driven as their designers planned is a very special sight.

If you want to camp with the group at Plymouth Rock, contact Ann or Jake at 847.295.2753 or snyder@chicagolandmgclub.com. Prices are about $30 per two persons per night, and we will put you on the list that we give to the campground staff and you will register with them on Friday July 18. If our site fills to capacity, there are single tent spaces available, and you can join us just as if your tent were in the club area. For a separate single camping site, you can make a reservation directly with Plymouth Rock Campground, P.O. Box 445, Elkhart Lake, WI 53020, phone 920.892.4252, fax 920.893.8452. Road America tickets are available at 800.365.7223 or www.roadamerica.com.

The campground is a family resort area with security, modern bath houses, playgrounds for children, tennis and basket ball courts, swimming pools, a lake front swimming area, a restaurant and store. The weather is always perfect
