July 6th-8th Jo Daviess County Tour

Come join us for the second annual run of the Secrets of Jo-Daviess County Tour on July 7 and 8, 2007. All of you have heard of Galena and most have visited there to enjoy the shopping, the old homes and the scenic area. But, many who visit there miss the MG- friendly driving along the spider web of rural roads that cover the county. They are hilly, curvy, paved and bordered with woods, rustic farms and long vistas. Here’s your chance to enjoy the area as never before.
The basic plan is a one or two day event – your choice. The first day, Saturday, will be a repeat of last year. We’ll launch at 10am from the Country Inn and Suites hotel in the town of Stockton on US Route 20. Your tour guide will lead the group along a pre-determined route through the countryside with stops at Savanna on the bank of the Mississippi river (lunch at Poopy’s!), the Mississippi Palisades State Park with beautiful vistas of the river from the limestone bluffs that define the park, Galena for a short shopping interval, a pass through Council Hill Station (a touch of Kentucky), a winery stop for some tasty refreshment, then dinner at the Woodbine golf course that was such a hit last year. Sunday will feature another guided itinerary with a driving route different from Saturday; a tour of a country winery at Massbach, a stop in quaint Elizabeth to see a pioneer fort reproduction and a railroad museum (and lunch!), concluding with some unusual attractions in tiny Woodbine. We’ll be sure to complete the scheduled activities in time for you to make the trip home unhurried.
Sorry, but hotel arrangements are a little bit complicated this year. Some of you may want to travel out to the area on Friday night so you can start the first tour day fresh. The Stockton hotel has a prior block on rooms for Friday night and cannot block rooms for us then, but try for a standby list and/or inquire after the prior block expires. As an alternative I’ve set up a block of ten rooms at the Baymont Inn and Suites on the north side of Freeport. This hotel is a quick 20 miles from the base hotel in Stockton. A block of 20 rooms is set up for Saturday night at the Stockton hotel.

If you’re coming out early on Friday please join us for a reception/open house at the Herman’s roost overlooking scenic Lake Carroll. We’re located convenient to your route into the area and to the two hotels. We’ll start at 3pm, or whenever you get here, until about 6pm when we’ll mosey up the road a piece to our favorite place for Friday Night Fish Fry. If you wish to attend contact me for more information.
PLEASE, if you are planning to attend any or all parts of the weekend, contact me by phone or e-mail. I need an attendance count to plan some of the activities and keeping me informed of your intentions will help a lot. I sure hope you will join us this year!
