Chicagoland MG Club: Driveline August 2009

Tech Session
Saturday, August 1, 2009
“Non-Running Car”

This session will involve working with a car that has not run for some time. The object is to get it running and checked for safe driving use. We will be at Carol Mullis’ house in Lombard starting at 9 AM (Mapquest to: 40 W Edward St, Lombard IL 600148). First task will be to install a new ignition lock; next is to get it running and checked. Depending on the circumstances, the car may be then moved to Jim Evans’ house in Glen Ellyn for further work.
August Club Meeting
At the August meeting Dave “Cowboy” Bralich will be telling us about the Fall Tune-Down Party and our regular tech session.  Please come prepared with any questions and suggestions for future tech session topics.
The “Even” Natter 'n' Noggin
Hopefully nobody is surprised by this announcement. You all know by know where you have to be on the second Tuesday of August, right?  ... Yes indeed, August is an even Month and that means that we will have our Monthly Natter 'n Noggin at the Roundhead's Pizza Pub, our South location in Downers Grove.  Please come and join us for a drink, a bite, and some MG tire kicking. We have reservations from 7:00 PM under the MG Club name. If the weather is good we'll have tables outside on the patio. The restaurant knows that we are not all coming at the same time and that we like separate checks.

The classifieds for these parts will be active for about one week, so check the site often. Items that are not sold will be auctioned on eBay under the seller name of cmgc-parts. Please contact David Evans at ebaymaster@chicagolandmgclub.com for any questions or part requests. The current eBay items may be viewed here at http://myworld.ebay.com/cmgc-parts

Lands End Rally
July 11, 2009 - West of the Fox River

After an early morning storm had departed the skies cleared and left us a perfect day for top down cruising. The rally start was spot on schedule at 11 AM from Tinseltown USA theater in North Aurora, encountering only two traffic lights to get out town. The route covered some of the lesser traveled rural roads and came to visit several small towns west of Aurora. We encountered lots of historical markers and antique farm equipment, mostly more than 100 years old same as the towns.
One of the gimmicks for this gimmick rally was a crossword puzzle. The General Instructions stated that the crossword puzzle was only for reference and would not be scored, so you could leave it blank or do whatever you wanted with it. The character count length for each answer was given along with questions, so everyone left the puzzle blank, figuring it was a waste of time, but some of the "exact spelling required" answers could only be resolved by reference to some other words.
With the rally running a few minutes slow half way around the route, we took a break at BBQ Express in Somonauk and extended the finish time by half an hour. The second half of the route was quicker and ended at Denney’s Restaurant next door to the starting point. Only one car missed the 4:30 deadline and the allocated mileage allowance, and not by much. A perfect score for 101 correct answers (10 points each) could have been 1010 points, but there were plenty of blanks (free), a fair number of incorrect answers (6 points off) and one small time and mileage penalty. The points spread was not close, so no arguments about technicalities in the questions or answers. A good time was had by all, and those who didn't come missed a really good cruise.
Results:
- MGB- MGTD
1st - Victor and Mark L'Heureux- MGB- 664 points
2nd - Jim and Marion Michel- MGA- 596 points
3rd - Jim Evans (and Kimber's ghost)- 376 points
4th - Leigh and Joanne Clark- 144 points
This was only the second rally for the Clarks who showed a marked improvement from their first outing. They had a memorable time cruising the countryside in their TD with smiles all the way.
