Chicagoland MG Club: Driveline September 2009

Halloween Rally
October 25, 2009

On Sunday October 25 we will have a new type of Halloween event. It will be a very simple rally, maybe so simple that we can also call it a Halloween Run. And because Halloween is the perfect time to see a few ghosts, we thought it would be a good idea to go and find the ghosts of some longtime Chicagoland MG Club members. Members whose name you may see in the membership directory or hear about occasionally, but who you only very rarely get a glimpse of!!!
The Halloween Run does not include any competitive driving. There are no trick questions and their will be no confusing instructions. You just follow the general directions and chase a few ghosts. There will be no need for special tuning, no helmets are required, no penalties will be assessed, and encyclopedic knowledge about MG’s will not be a competitive advantage. It will be that simple! And the additional benefit? No need for arguments or fist fights with your co-driver or navigator.
We will meet at 10:00 AM in front of the Caribou Coffee in the Poplar Creek shopping center in Hoffman Estates at the Route 59/Sutton Road exit of I-90. If you come from the East, turn North on Route 59/Sutton Road at the light at the end of the exit ramp, then turn left on the entrance road for the mall area at the first traffic light on Route 59. (turn left at the end of the ramp and left at the second traffic light if you come on I-90 from the West). The Caribou Coffee is not immediately in the line of sight because it is hidden a little bit behind the Claim Jumper Restaurant.
We will start the Halloween Run at 10:30 AM. The Run is about 40 miles long and with some stops along the way will take about 3 hours. We will finish at The Onion Pub and Brewery in Lake Barrington (on Pepper Road just north of the Northwest Highway) where we can have a late lunch and sample some of the Wild Onion Brewery beers. Check out the restaurant and the brewery www.onionpub.com
To return back to I-90  from The Onion is about 10 miles, either on Route 14/Northwest Highway and Route 59/Sutton Road, or via Route 14/Northwest Highway and Barrington Road.

Fall Tune-Down and Chili Party
Sunday, November 8, 2009 -- 10 am - 4 pm
82 King Drive - Streamwood, IL

This has been a big hit the last couple of years, so don't miss it. Cowboy has a low lift drive-over hoist so we can do some underbody inspection, maybe a few oil changes, some tune-up work or minor repairs. Bring your own parts, oil and a jug for oil disposal (and yes, you will take your own away). Chili and drinks will be provided. Pictures and such from last year’s event can be seen at

Cruise to the Rock
November 26, 2008 - Chicago, Illinois

There is nothing better than to be driving our cars after everyone else has stopped driving theirs. We will have our traditional, “top down” cruise to celebrate the first automobile race in America on Thanksgiving Day in 1895.
We meet at the historical race monument (the rock) at 9:00 AM, the west side of the Museum of Science and Industry in historic Hyde Park. Expect there to be local cable TV coverage on the scene. There will be lunch afterward at Stage's Restaurant - 657 W 31st Street, Chicago, several blocks west of the Dan Ryan expressway.

Tech Sessions
August 1st:
A half dozen club members showed up to help the Mullis family get their MGB back on the road. This car had sat unused for over a year and needed a little TLC to make it roadworthy. Club members installed a steering column mounted ignition lock, and also bled out the brakes and clutch hydraulics. Once running, it was discovered that the trans had somehow lost reverse gear, so the test ride confirmed good forward motion but the car is still not ready for use.
September 6th:
Club member Dino Perez has offered to host a Tech Session at his home workshop. This session will focus on electrical troubleshooting with a member’s car that is experiencing some unusual electrical problems. Starts about 10 am; MapQuest or Google to 3985 Pear Tree Drive, Lake-in-the-Hills IL 60156 or call Dino at 847-458-8598. See the website for further info.
