Annual General Meeting of the
North American MGB Register

Chicago, October 28, 2000

by Ann & Jake Snyder

The Chicagoland MG Club hosted this year's NAMGBR AGM. The first of these meetings that we attended was in 1993, and that also was held in Chicago. That was the meeting at which Chicagoland was presented with the Chapter of the Year award. Since then, we and others from this club have attended AGMs in other parts of the country (New Orleans is a favorite). This year we had visitors in attendance from California, New York, and Toronto, as well as from nearer states (Ohio, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin), and from other parts of Illinois. Most attendees from out of town arrive Friday evening and we gather for dinner. This year, Oscar and Diana Gonzales had found a hotel with free shuttle service to O'Hare, which allowed us access to downtown via the CTA Blue Line. So Friday evening we congregated at the Billy Goat Tavern & Grill on lower Michigan to introduce our guests to the legacy of Mike Royko and "cheeseborger, cheeseborger, cheeseborger". Saturday morning, prior to the meeting, the club provided transportation by bus to and from a specially arranged tour of Continental Classic Motors warehouse, where they store one of the early Bentley special reproductions and other exotics, including British cars like the Lotuses that John and Joel Weinberger race. Bill Hedrick and Kim Tonry met the group in Hinsdale for the tour. The bus also made a stop at Motorsport Collector in Downers Grove.

Chicagoland club members who attended the meeting included Gene Cooper, Diana Gonzales, Jean and Rick Ingram, Kelvin Palmer, Kim Tonry, and Jake and Ann Snyder. The primary goal in establishing the Register was to have a democratically-run organization, and this is the meeting at which business is conducted, officers, coordinators, and registrars present their reports, and announcements are made regarding upcoming events. David Deutsch was elected Vice Chairman and D Zimmerman was reelected Secretary. Full minutes of the meeting will be posted on the NAMGBR Web site (www.namgbr.org/namgbr).

After the meeting we were joined by Becky Cooper and by Reinout Vogt for the trip, again by CTA, to Lou Malnati's for pizza (the line was too long at Gino's East) and then to Blues Chicago for - what else?- blues. Next year's AGM will be held in Texas, so if you're looking for a fall road trip, watch for details in this newsletter.
