Chicagoland MG Club: Driveline February 2016

books The Library Muse

The two of you (Hi Di and Jim) who regularly read this blurb know that I have a soft spot in my heart, or perhaps head, for Jaguars. This year I was hoping to get a new one for Christmas, but was again let down by both Santa and Deb. So when we went to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this year I took my check book with me. The auto dealers generally offer some good deals during the show. And by the time that the check bounced I’d be back hiding in Chicago. They’d never find me here. What could go wrong? What went wrong was that Jaguar didn’t have any representation there. Nary a Jag, or Bentley, Roller, Lotus, or Morgan. MINI was left to hoist the Union Jack alone.

I did spend some time checking out the Ford Transit Van. Two front seats, just like an MG. The rear was full of shelving along each side wall with a small work bench. AC adaptable electric wall plugs. Plenty of room to carry tools and spare parts. Ceiling height was about 6ft 6. Just take out one section of the shelving and replace with a small frig, wine rack, and a kegger, and it would make the perfect support vehicle for the club’s weekend tours. I bet that we can talk the Club’s officers into springing for one. After a couple of beers.

Fix It With Steve...

Hi Folks,

Well the ‘Fix-it’ garage has completed its first project of 2016. The 1970 Spitfire that arrived on a tow truck on January 2nd drove home on 1/16. A success! The new coil and brake master cylinder got installed. We had a couple of test drives to shake out a few gremlins, like lose radiator hose clips and a weeping brake line.

Normal service will be resumed on 1/30 when a TR6 is going to be removed of its engine for a rebuild. While the engine is at the machine shop the entire rear suspension is going to get rebuilt. Hopefully when that’s done the engine will be back so it can be reassembled & put back in the car. This work is basically going to fill up February.

On the books for March is resurrecting a Morris Minor that’s been off the road for a few years. In between, in the spare time (?!), there are a couple of MG engines to get rebuilt. Hope to see you round when you can make it.

Meanwhile stay warm. Spring will be here soon.
