Chicagoland MG Club: Driveline April 2014

books The Library Muse

I am writing this on the first day spring. I had big plans for today. Recent rains have cleaned the roads and a promise of 60 degree temps. Time to get the ‘B’ out and tidied in time to drive to the upcoming swap meet. However a light snow this morning brought out the highway department trucks to spread the nemesis of older cars, salt. What happened to the reported salt shortage the news was talking about a few short weeks ago? Winter is a long time leaving. Hopefully by the time you read this the roads will be clear again.

But spring is in the air. The birds are back, chipmunks are chasing around the yard, and the Formula One circus has begun. The reigning championship team for the past four years, Red Bull/ Vettle, DNFed in Australia. The second Red Bull car, driven by Ricciardo, got second place on the podium, but was later disqualified due to not replacing an improper fuel delivery system. No, it was not made by SU. New aerodynamic and engine rules will make for an interesting season. F1 now runs turbo 1.6 liter engines, less displacement than your MG, but I think that they may have a little more torque. With more power and less down force the drivers were apt to unintentionally power slide thru some of the corners. I’m sure that they found it quite exciting.

No book review this issue, but at the April meeting we will have a new DVD, An MG is Born, featuring a complete rebuild. To be reviewed next month (after I watch it). And lastly thanks to Dave Woodcock for reminding me that the British term for a two door convertible is drop-head coupe. Mea culpa.
