Secrets of Jo Daviess County Tour for 2013
June 25-27, 2013
The eighth running of the Secrets of Jo Daviess County tour is shaping up nicely. Our mid-week schedule actually is setting a record for attendance of this tour. At this writing we have 23 cars on the roster. I’ll reprise the general plan for the three-day event.
Tuesday, June 25, we’ll hold an afternoon reception at our house at Lake Carroll followed by the must-do fish fry at the Yellow Creek Inn. Wednesday (26), the outbound drive and boat ride to Guttenberg, IA and Thursday (27) the way home. We’ll meander our way through Jo Daviess County and southwest Wisconsin to the good ole Potosi Brewery where we’ll stop for a cold one. Then on to Cassville where we’ll take the ferryboat to cross the mighty Mississippi. The nine car ferry carries 12 MGs. We’ll overnight in Guttenberg in a rustic hotel in a stone building that was once a button factory
situated right on the shoreline of the Mississippi. Some rooms have balconies overlooking the river. Walking distance up the shore is a lock and dam. It’s interesting to watch the huge barge sets and towboats negotiate the lock. The final day we’ll again meander through SW Wisconsin to return to our traditional end point in Monroe. And we might just stumble into a winery and/or cheese factory along the way. The plan is to get you to Monroe in the early afternoon so you can return home early in the evening.
Arrangements: The large turnout puts us into Plan B on hotel accommodations. For Tuesday night following the reception and fish fry the recommended hotel, Country Inn and Suites in Stockton has 16 of our 20 room block taken. The manager has added three more to the block and there are three more rooms beyond that. The destination hotel in Guttenburg, The Landing, is essentially full with one room remaining. The first alternate motel is the Eagle View. It’s a true mom and pop, older, simple basic rooms and very clean. It’s a couple miles up the road on a high bluff with a spectacular view of the Mississippi. If you visit the Guttenberg town website, guttenbergiowa.net, you’ll find a list of accommodations including B&Bs. I can’t vouch for any of them because we’ve not had time to visit them. I do not recommend The Guttenberg Motel. At the Country Inn and The Landing ask for the MG club block. The blocks expire on May 25. Other locations do not have room blocks. If by the time you read this you’ve found hotels full, contact me and we’ll work on alternates.

If you are going to join us, PLEASE, contact me at the phone numbers above or by e-mail at email@example.com. We need to know the attendance count for making arrangements with hotels, restaurants and other attractions on the tour. Nancy and I really appreciate your attendance and support for our tour and we’re looking forward to a good time with our MG friends.
