Emma, and the other cars, bicycles, and a motorcycle, plus a neighbor, Annie, who keeps an eye on everything when we’re not at home. We also found Harry who does some pet-sitting on the side for his bicycling friends. All of that made it very easy to turn our words into deeds and get ready for the 2018 GOF Central in Lake Delavan, WI, June 27-29.

So we left our house in Decatur, GA with Trixi, and Mimi under the loving care of Annie and Harry on Tuesday, June 26. With Emma in the trailer and cruise control on 70 mph we made it through Georgia, Tennessee and central Illinois to Bloomington-Normal on the first day. With only a few hours of driving left on Wednesday we got to the Lake Lawn resort early afternoon. The moment we stepped out of the car and entered the resort lobby we saw the first of so many MG friends, from the VMGCC and the CMGC in Chicago, but also from the NAMMMR and from previous conventions. And the phenomena continued. We saw many more old friends and met more new friends over the three days. Because the GOF was organized by the VMGCC we saw most of the active club members in one capacity or another when we entered the event registration room. And because it was about eight months since we’d seen each other it took a very long time: How are you? How have you been? … At the same time many CMGC members and other old friends walked in to register and there were more: Good seeing you again! What’s happening?…

It felt a little bit strange to be just a guest and not having anything to do like I would have when I would still be in Chicago. Henneke must have sensed my uneasiness and volunteered me to help with the First Timer Display, the opening event on Wednesday afternoon. GOF chairman Ray Costa gave me the signs and the parking suggestions for the MGs that appear at a GOF for the first time. We had about 20 lined up along the path through the court yard of the resort. A beautiful setting where everyone could get to know the new cars and their owners. There were modern Midgets, Bs, T-Series Midgets, a V8 powered TF race car, a ZB saloon from the fifties, some prewar Triple Ms, and a massively large SA saloon.

The following day was driving day. We did the rally, which circled us around lakes and through the towns of Delavan and Geneva. The historic 120-year-old Yerkes Observatory of the University of Chicago offered a fantastic photo-op along the way. Others took the scenic drive to the nearby town of Burlington. We all came back to the resort around the same time. Because the NAMMMR is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the members had received an invitation for an Ice Cream Social Drive and a
