Chicagoland MG Club: Driveline October 2013

  Monthly Meeting Minutes
Third Monday, September 16, 2013

David Novak

Attendance: 27 members

At 8:01 pm the gavel to order was banged by President George Phariss.

Tech SessionSteve Skegg SU carburetors can present some interesting problems – Steve presented a few that he had come across while working on a number of MGBs. Steve prefers the HS4 for reliability over the newer HIF and Stromberg models. Distributors with maladies were passed around for ‘Show & Tell’.

A short break was next and the 50/50 raffle was held, John Kearns was the winner of $15! Congrats!

Driveline Editor is looking for input (pictures and write-ups for past and future CMGC events.

Driving Reports:
Darryl Mayo recounted the very successful British Car Festival. There were about 500 classic cars in attendance – 137 of these were MGs. It was noted that there were a number of vintage cars in the spectator parking lot that did not enter the festival area.
Bill Mennell noted that he was unable to attend the last Autocross and asked if there asked if there were any members at that event.
Reinout Vogt noted that the Peds in the Weeds 2000 event was held on August 13th at Lutheran General Hospital in Glenview. This event allows Pediatric cancer patients enjoy their day in the sun Sunday. A number of CMGC members were at the event hosting rides in their cars. There were plenty of smiles on the children’s’ faces.

Tech Session:
A Tech Session was held August 24th at Wally Szempruch’s house in Gurnee. Wally has recently finished restoring his late model MGB and a number of members were on hand to assist in the tune-up for his Weber 32/36 DGAV carburetor and visually inspected for other possible work that may be required before taking the car on the road.
Dave Bralich noted the Fall Tune-down & Chili Party will start at 11:00 am (not 8:00 am as posted in last month’s issue of Driveline).

Upcoming driving events:
September 19-22 - Wine, Cheese & Beer Tour – event starts in Hinsdale on Saturday (or Friday night if you reserved a room) and will travel historic Route 66 to Springfield.

Oscar Gonzales noted that the 2014 NAMGBR Convention will be held in French Lick, Indiana on June 15th next year. Mark your calendars now and get ready to join the CMGC contingency to this event.

New Business:
October 11 - Special Event to coincide with the Mecum Auto Auction in Schamburg at 11am at Finn McCools. Auction starts at 10am with Live TV coverage beginning at 2pm and ends at 8pm. Owner, Mike at Finn McCools will provide shuttle to and from the event. They open at 11 but he will be there early for the event. May have a few free tickets. Admission is $20 He wants to park MG 's close to the street.

Finances – Treasurer, Ralph Arata prepared a handout listing the club’s financial position. Although we have about $17,000 in our accounts, we are slowly depleting these funds. Jim Evans noted that for the club to maintain our accounts, we should be looking at obtaining funding by outside sources and not internally through raising dues from our members.

Project Car – An outside source in the past has been the restoring a project car for sale /auction. Jim Evans has a MGB available for this purpose. If the club can provide a space to perform the restoration and obtain a mentor for the task, this might be a way to generate necessary funds and provide an educational experience for the members. More discussion to follow.

Next CMGC Meeting agendas
October – MG Horror stories & annual CMGC birthday party (37 years!). We will begin the process of nominating club officers for 2014
November – showing of legendary movie “Rendezvous” - A high-speed drive through the streets of Paris.
December - Christmas Party December 7th at Bella Vista Banquets in Bensenville price not set yet, probably $30 per person.

The meeting was closed with a bang of the gavel at 9:37 PM

Respectfully submitted,
Victor L’Heureux
