The 5th Halloween Rally
Sunday, October 27, 2013
Trick or Treat!…It was a glorious day for an outing – brisk autumn air, clear sky and 17 MGs ready
for a rally. This year’s rally started at the Vogt’s home in Prospect Heights with hot coffee, donuts, and an assortment of
pastries. Costumes were not required although suggested – a few turned out in costume. Dave Bralich and Dee Lettioni came as a swashbuckling pirate and a port-o’call wench. Vic & Penny were ‘Black Bart’ riverboat gambler and a scarecrow. John Kearns wore his gala purple ‘Big Daddy’ pimp hat and white silk ascot while Juliana looked fetching in a cat mask.
The rally cut through Cook and Lake Counties making six stops in forest preserves being presented with challenges reminiscent of a road rally to Monte Carlo. First stop the drivers were challenged with the task of locating the destination of the Monte Carlo rally on the map – where was this? (I thought Monte Carlo was a car…). Other challenging events in store for the participants were: changing a flat tire, navigating a narrow, covered bridge and parallel parking. Or course, having the necessary spare repair parts and tools to install them was a must.
All participants made it through this grueling gauntlet of trials in time for some libation and lunch at Emmett’s Tavern & Brewing Company in downtown Palatine. We even added a few more participants at the end location – joining at the destination to share in the awards ceremony and trophy presentations. Okay, so there weren’t any trophies, but we did receive recognition from our fellow participants and some novel pieces of memorabilia brought all the way from The Netherlands by Nea Gieske-Timmermans.
The best overall scores for the event were: Roger & Shirley Goebert, 1st place; Phil & Sandy Wydra, 2nd place; Ralph Arata, & Doug Clark 3rd place.
Thanks to Reinout & Henneke Vogt for organizing a fun-filled rally and all the hard work from the many rally judges manning the events.
