Chicagoland MG Club: Driveline December 2016

Last month I mentioned that I need to winterize the MG-B. Well, it’s with a heavy heart, that I tell you, today was the day. After an unseasonably warm November, our fine fall weather finally gave way to the early stages of winter.

Unfortunately, those who have dealt with a cold vinyl top, know the joys of trying to wrestle it over the frame. Yes, I didn’t follow my own advice, and I waited until it was a crisp 40ºF to finally put the top up and winterize the B. My winterizing routine is pretty involved and convoluted. Run the car up to temp by driving around, dump some Stabil in the tank, fill the tank up to the brim, drive home, remove keys.

I hope you had a great year of driving your MG(‘s), and had a lot of fun. I know I did. Now it looks like we’ll have to wait until either a freaky warm February, or until the snow flies then melts!  Until then, try to keep your MG warm and dry!

I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving. Among the things I am thankful for this year is the Cubs winning the World Series. It is not as high on my list as health for family and friends. I am also thankful for the almost balmy end of November weather. If you did the cruise to the rock on Thanksgiving morning I’m sure it was a good day compared to some past cruise days.

I don’t want this to be a travel log but I had few observations while on vacation in Europe.

Susan and I spent a week in London. We spent one day riding in the countryside. We went to Stonehenge, the Cotswolds and Stratford upon Avon. How many MGs did I see in a week? Zero, Zip, Nata. I was being a tourist so I may have missed some but I thought I would see a few on the road. The roads were perfect for an MG. Susan even wondered how much it would cost to bring Maggie to England. We were on a tour so the driving was left to an expert. I didn’t try to drive on the wrong side of the road and not sure I would ever want to but you can dream. Our next stop was Paris where I had a chance to drive a Lamborghini. You’ll notice I said I had a chance. People were lining up to take their turn for a 20-minute drive in a truly luxurious car. The fee was 89 Euros and probably worth it on a race track or open road but it was in a very congested area of Paris. Imagine being behind the wheel of a Lamborghini and being in bumper to bumper traffic. Not what the car was designed for so I turned it down but again, you can dream.

Wishing you and family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
