3rd Annual Amtrak Road Trip

by Jake Snyder

It took the last two years to absorb the contents of the Ford Museum in Dearborn. This year we will travel Amtrak to St. Louis. The train trip is a good length to enjoy, about five hours. The weather will be of no concern, and the train will have acceptable beverage service in the club car. There is a lot to see, and those who are going or know the area can help plan the visit, selecting from the Memorial Arch, transportation museums (check Autoweek's PLACES), riverboat tours and reconstructed period areas on the river and any other places of interest. Previous AmtrakRoadTrippers agreed that the weekend of January 24 and 25 was fine.

Recommended travel is Amtrak 305, leaving Chicago at 3:30 P.M. on Friday, January 22; returning Sunday on Amtrak 322, leaving St. Louis at 9:00 A.M. The round trip fare is $66 per person, but check the web site at www.amtrak.com for special prices. Also, AAA members receive a 10% discount off the lowest available Amtrak fare.

Make this reservation early, as the trains fill quickly. And if we all get to Union Station in Chicago about an hour early on Friday, there is a good chance we can get seating together. The phone number is 800-USA-RAIL. Stay in the Courtyard by Marriott, 2340 Market at Jefferson, about a mile from the river. The special price for this weekend is $49 per night, either king or double. The hotel has a pool, whirlpool and gym. Make the reservation at 800-321-2211 or 314-241-9111, and mention you are with the Chicagoland MG Club to get the low rate. You have until January 4 to make the reservation.

The best part of the trip is that members of the MG Club of St. Louis will be on hand to help us settle in.
