Meet & Greet Time

Sometimes when the cars need a rest, or we just need a respite from driving them, we like to do dinner with friends, a yard party, an outting in the park, an Amtrak road trip, camping for a weekend, or other pleasantries with our friends. If you don't find something you like here, we're always open to suggestions for more fun.

Meetings - Events - Newsletter

The club meets on the third Monday of each month at Mack's Golden Pheasant in Elmhurst, IL (just west of Route 83 on North Avenue (Rt-64) at 8:00 P.M.   Come early for dinner or chat.   Natter & Noggin is held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 P.M., currently meeting at various locations. 15th Annual Camping Trip to Road America
July 15-17, 2011

Ann or Jake Snyder - snyder@chicagolandmgclub.com - 847-295-2753

The third weekend of July is always a thrill at Road America, the four-mile road course about a hundred miles north of Chicago, because the cars cover the span from the 50s to some that were raced in international competition only a few years ago. The cars you can read about in Burt Levy’s “The Last Open Road” series will be there if you look. And Burt Levy himself will most likely be signing and selling his editions. There are competition classes for just about every car ever made and they all race at some point during the weekend.

Friday night -- get to the campground by late afternoon and be ready to leave by 5 P.M. for the race car parade to Elkhart Lake. Dinner time—usually at Three Guys and a Grill at Marsh Lodge.

Saturday – Go to the races, visit a local historic site, hang out in Elkhart Lake, or go shopping in Plymouth to the south. But be at the camp ground to share a supper if you like. Bring your meat (if you eat it) and a side-dish to share. There will be a charcoal grill for cooking. After supper go back to Elkhart Lake for the Concours d’Elegance. This would be a good chance to get a pop at Siebken’s Inn or an ice cream sundae at Gessert’s fountain.

Sunday – Pack up your tent unless you are staying longer, repeat Saturday’s activities. Most of us stay at Plymouth Rock Camping Resort across the street from the track and a bit south on Route 67. Bring a tent in your MG and ask when you register to be with the Chicagoland MG Club group. The cost is about fifty dollars a night for two persons and one tent. Telephone: 920-892-4252. Other camping options: Marsh Lodge; rate is $20 per night. On the Road America site; must purchase a weekend ticket. The schedule and reduced price tickets are available for the races at www.roadamerica.com, 800.365.7223.

Charity Oil Change Day
November 19, 2011

at Dave's Auto Clinic, Prospect Heights, IL

Many homeless people in our area have cars. Some loose their home because of temporary unfavorable circumstances but can retain their car, some have a car as their only place to be and store a few possessions, and many need transportation to go to jobs and rely on it to get around on their way back to more secure living circumstances. Dependency on the vehicles becomes more important in the winter time. We work with Journeys from PADS to HOPE in Arlington Heights www.padstohope.org to help their clients with an oil change and some winter preparation.

16th Annual Amtrak Road Trip
Detroit Auto Show - Detroit, MI
January 20-22, 2012

When all the MGs have been safely stored for the win-ter and all car projects are still in the planning stage, what could be better than a weekend of visiting hundreds of new cars and peering into their innermost workings though cut-away’s of engines, gearboxes, engine control systems and most every-thing else? Well, nothing that we can think of can match the North American International Auto Show (aka “Detroit Au-to Show”) for adding a sense of purpose to the long winter months.

And the easy way to get the Detroit Auto Show is to take Amtrak from Union Station in Chicago to about ten miles west of the center of Detroit, to the Dearborn, Michigan Amtrak station. A very short ride will take us to the Greenfield Inn in Allen Park. This large, full-service hotel was the home to Charles Lindberg about 70 years ago when he worked with Ford Motor Company on a defense project. The walls of all the corridors are covered with automobile-related paintings, sales posters and photographs. It is hard to find a missing marque and much of the artwork is only to be seen here. Unfortunately, the bar, pool and sauna compete for the visitor’s attention so that seeing everything can take multiple visits with what time is left over from traveling, resting and visiting the Detroit Auto Show.

We will assemble in the half-basement behind the bar on the food court level of Union Station around mid-morning on Friday, January 20 and proceed to the boarding gate with enough time to get seats together on the train. Then on to the Greenfield Inn, to Cobo Hall on Saturday, leaving for home from Dearborn just before noon on Sunday.

Check Autoweek for coverage of the show the week before we go. There is a week of press meetings and symposia prior to the week of public viewing.

Details for the hotel:
$86 per night for 20 & 21 January. Phone 1-800-342-5802 or 313-271-1600.

We may have to take a cab from the Amtrak station to the hotel but usually get a shuttle ride back on Sunday morning. Transportation to Cobo Hall is by cab – the fare should be less than $10 each person each way. The listed admission price is $12 per person. Check www.naias.com for details.

This is a peaceful, pleasant rest-filled weekend. Treat yourself to the comfort of letting someone else do the driving.
